Services Provided,
The Health Room provides:
  • Assessment and care of illness and injury
  • First aid and emergency response
  • Management of chronic health conditions, including:
    • Diabetes
    • Asthma
    • Seizure disorders
    • Severe allergies/anaphylaxis
  • Medication administration in accordance with district policy
  • Health screenings as required by Pennsylvania state regulations
  • Immunization compliance monitoring
  • Health education and wellness support
  • Coordination of care between home, school and healthcare providers

Emergency Care Plans

Parents/guardians should notify the school nurse of any significant medical condition that may require an Emergency Care Plan or Individualized Healthcare Plan, including:

Students with asthma, seizure disorders, food allergies/anaphylaxis, or other conditions requiring emergency medication must have the appropriate medical forms completed and signed by their healthcare provider. Current physician orders, completed medical forms, and any necessary medications or supplies should be provided to the Health Room prior to the start of the school year whenever possible.

Prompt communication with the school nurse helps ensure appropriate care and emergency response plans are in place to support your child's health and safety at school.

Welcome to School Health Services - Grades 9 - 12
The Fleetwood Area High School Health Room serves students in grades 9–12 and is committed to supporting the physical, emotional, and educational well-being of every student. Healthy students are better prepared to learn, participate, and succeed in school.
The certified school nurse provides care for illness and injury, coordinates the management of chronic health conditions, responds to medical emergencies, administers medications in accordance with district policy, and serves as a liaison between families, healthcare providers, and school staff.

Parents/guardians are encouraged to contact the Health Room with any questions or concerns regarding their child's health needs, medications, immunizations, or medical conditions that may impact their school day.
Student Illness Guidelines
To help maintain a healthy school environment, please keep your child home if they are experiencing any of the following symptoms:
  • Fever of 100°F or higher within the past 24 hours
  • Vomiting and/or Diarrhea within the past 24 hours
  • Symptoms of a contagious illness that may put others at risk

   Returning to school

Students may return to school when they:

  • Have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication
  • Have not vomited or had diarrhea for at least 24 hours
    

   Reporting an Absence

If your child is absent due to illness, please notify the school attendance office according to district procedures. If your child has been diagnosed with a contagious illness, we encourage you to notify the Health Room so we can provide appropriate guidance and support.

If a student becomes ill during the school day, they should report to the Health Room for evaluation by the school nurse.

 
 
Medication Information (Prescription or Non-formulary)
Whenever possible, medications should be administered at home. If a student requires medication during the school day, the following requirements must be met:
  • A completed medication authorization form signed by both the parent/guardian and healthcare provider must be on file in the Health Room.
  • Medication must be brought to school by a parent/guardian and supplied in the original pharmacy-labeled container.
  • No more than a 30-day supply of medication may be stored in the Health Room at one time.
Medications cannot be administered at school without the required documentation. Request to Administer Medication
Any medication remaining in the Health Room at the end of the school year must be picked up by a parent/guardian. Medications not picked up by the designated deadline will be disposed of in accordance with district procedures.
Annual Online Registration (OLR)
Annual Online Registration (OLR) must be completed and updated prior to the start of each school year.
Parents/guardians are required to review and update their student's health information through the Parent Portal in Infinite Campus each year. Accurate and current health information is essential to ensure your child receives appropriate care during the school day.
The Health OLR must be completed before the school nurse can administer medication to your child.

Failure to complete the Health OLR may prevent the nurse from administering medications during the school day. Routine health services will continue to be provided as needed.
Important Medication Reminder
In accordance with Fleetwood Area School District policy, students are not permitted to bring medication (over the counter or prescription) to school or self-administer medication unless specific authorization has been approved by the school nurse and the required documentation is on file.
For the safety of all students, all medications must be delivered to the Health Room by a parent/guardian and stored according to district procedures. Medications found in a student's possession without authorization may be subject to school disciplinary procedures and will be handled in accordance with district policy.
Exceptions may apply for approved self-carry medications, such as inhalers, epinephrine auto-injectors, or diabetic supplies, when the appropriate physician orders and parent permissions have been submitted and approved. (See Medication Information above)
Health Screenings
In accordance with Pennsylvania state requirements, students will participate in health screenings conducted by the school nurse at the beginning of the school year. Screenings include:
Vision screening
Height and weight measurements
Hearing screening (11th grade students only)
If a screening indicates that further evaluation may be needed, a referral notice will be sent home. Parents/guardians are encouraged to schedule a follow-up examination with their healthcare provider as soon as possible.
After the evaluation has been completed, please return the completed evaluation report to the school nurse. This information helps ensure that school health records remain current and that students receive any necessary support during the school day.

Immunization Requirements (12th-grade meningococcal requirements )

Pennsylvania law requires all students to meet immunization requirements for school attendance.

Students entering 12th grade are required to provide documentation of the second dose of the meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4). In accordance with Pennsylvania Department of Health regulations, students who do not meet this requirement may attend school for five school days while obtaining the required immunization or providing appropriate documentation.

After the five-day provisional period, students who have not met the immunization requirement or provided an approved exemption are subject to exclusion from school until the requirement is satisfied.

Families are encouraged to submit immunization records before the start of the school year to avoid any interruption in school attendance.

Please contact the Health Room with any questions regarding immunization requirements, compliance status, or acceptable medical or religious exemptions.

Physical Examinations (11th-grade requirement)

Pennsylvania state regulations require all students to have a physical examination during their 11th-grade year. Physical Exam Form

Students may submit documentation of a physical examination completed by their personal healthcare provider. PIAA sports physicals are accepted to meet the 11th-grade physical examination requirement. Additionally, a physical examination completed during the student's 10th-grade year may satisfy the requirement if it was performed on or after July 1 preceding the student's 11th-grade year.

Fleetwood Area School District partners with Lehigh Valley Health Network, part of Jefferson Health, to provide free school physical examinations for students who need one. These examinations are performed by the district's school physicians.
